The call to Sabbath rest is located in both creation and redemption. In Exodus 20:8–11, we are called to Sabbath because after creating, God rests on that seventh day.3 In Deuteronomy 5:12–15, the call to Sabbath is rooted in God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt, where the people of God were enslaved and toiled for others.4 This change from the Exodus call for Sabbath to the Deuteronomy call beautifully reflects the dialectic of the kingdom.
